Determination of Benzalkonium Chlorides in Textile Industry by LCMSMS System

Benzalkonium chloride is also named alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and ADBAC. Benzalkonium chloride has quaternary ammonium groups and is used as cationic surfactant and phase transfer agent.

The chemical industry has three main uses as biocide, cationic surfactant and phase transfer agent.

Benzalkonium chloride is commercially known as BC50, BC80, BAC50, BAC80.

Scope of application

  • It is used in the textile sector as bacteria and moth preventive.
  • It is used as an antibacterial agent in the last process stages in textile and footwear industry.
  • In pharmaceutical products, the skin is used as antiseptics.
  • Used as a disinfectant in new generation hand cleaning gels.
  • Used as anti-microbial in cosmetic products.
  • It is used as disinfectant in swimming pools, floor and hard surface cleaners.
  • It is used in wetting and dyeing in the paper industry, leather and textile industries.

A 10% solution (or more) of benzalkonium chloride is toxic to humans, causing irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. Studies have shown that the gentoxic effect of benzalkonium chloride [2] and causes allergic reactions. Therefore sensitive analysis is important.
