Compared to traditional dispersive infrared spectrophotometers, FTIR is based on a superior operating principle that offers advantages such as Multiplex Advantage (multiple measurement), Aperture Advantage (solid angle) and Connes' Advantage (wavelength accuracy).

As a result, it provides a convenient way to achieve high sensitivity and high wavenumber accuracy. To take full advantage of these advantages, various accessories have been developed that offer cutting-edge solutions that were not possible before with conventional diffuser IR systems.

• Due to the simple optics involved in FTIR systems, attachments and accessories with more complex optics can be used to fully demonstrate their performance.

• Exceptionally high wavelength accuracy allows FTIR systems to obtain full spectrum using a single beam method that measures reference and measurement samples separately. This is more economical as it only requires an accessory.
  These accessories also include several innovations to minimize the amount of sample pre-processing or processing required. In other words, the goal of FTIR analysis is to achieve completely non-destructive analysis.

   

Attenuated total reflection (ATR) Accessories

Attenuated total reflection (ATR) is a method that allows the direct measurement of samples for FTIR. ATR method involves pressing the sample against a high-refractive-index prism and measuring the infrared spectrum using infrared light that is totally internally reflected in the prism. A diamond, zinc selenide (ZnSe) or germanium (Ge) prism is used in the ATR accessory.

 

 

ATR accessories can be used to measure a wide variety of samples; however, spectra can change based on the amount of pressure or have a small shift based on the crystal material. Shimadzu’s LabSolutions IR Software offers a ATR correction to correct for the interactions from the crystal material.

• In the ATR-8000 series, the incident angle is changeable in three steps of 30°, 45°, and 60°, so that measurement can be made to different depths.
• Combined with the program to correct for the penetrating depth of the infrared rays (which is a weak point of the ATR method because it differs depending on the wavenumber), this feature provides spectra that are highly comparable to those given by another method.
• A KRS-5 prism is provided standard. An optional Ge prism is used to measure samples with a high refractive index. ATR-8000A includes the automatic accessory recognition function.
